Unless you own a boat or airplane, the only way to visit the islands is via one of several ferry services. A few ferries also provide service between islands. During the summer months they run on a regular schedule. Most of the islands do not require a car to get around, and it's actually more fun to go without having one on the island but you will have to pay to park to leave your car behind. On the islands themselves, there are other transportation options including bicycle rentals, golf cart rentals, and a few taxis. If you leave your vehicle on the mainland, make sure valuables are secured in the trunk and park in the lot provided by the ferry service.
Jet Express provides a state-of-the-art, modern designed catamaran, offering the smoothest, fastest ride across Lake Erie. Choose from comfortable, all-weather protected, indoor seating or a thrilling open air ride on the sun decks.
Traveling up to 40 mph, Jet Express offers a 12 1/2 mile scenic tour. On your way, you'll pass seven very small Lake Erie Islands and many unique points of interest. A knowledgeable crew is on hand to answer questions and provide service, shore-to-shore from downtown Port Clinton, and Sandusky to downtown Put-in-Bay, and Kelleys Island (Kelley's Island service departs only from the Sandusky Port). Jet Express is the most expensive of the 3 island ferries. It is also the fastest, but does not offer ferry service for autos. You can take a bicycle for an extra charge. From Port Clinton at the bridge, Jet Express offers service to Put-in-Bay. Kelleys Island service is only available at their Sandusky dock. They also off an island-hopping package and special excursions.
Kelleys Island Ferry offers the daily auto/passenger ferry service to Kelleys Island with a short enjoyable 20 minute boat ride. Boats are scheduled at least every hour (weather permitting) with additional service at peak times and holiday weekends. They have a family owned and operated fleet providing spacious travel areas either inside or out with the wind behind you. Kelleys Island Ferry only serves Kelleys Island from the north side of Marblehead Penninsula.
Miller Boat Line offers passenger and auto ferry service to South Bass Island and Middle Bass Island. There are free parking areas near the loading area, but does not include the short term parking at the dock. The South Bass Island dock is on the south side of the island which may make a difference if you're not planning on taking a bike, auto or renting something at the dock.
